Doha
Doha Facts What is it? Doha is the capital city of Qatar, a small but extremely rich country located in the Middle East. Where is it? The city is located halfway up the eastern coast of Qatar, a peninsula jutting out from Saudi Arabia into the Arabian (Persian) Gulf, facing the UAE. Arabic Name: Ad Dawhah, which literally means a place protected by trees. Which is ironic, as there are not many trees in Doha. Transliteration: الدوحة Alternative name: Al Bidda Note: Al Bidda dates back to at least the eighteenth century, and possibly before. Doha and little Doha were established around 1850 less than a kilometre away from Al Bidda. The present city encompasses the area of all three villages, and can be called both Doha or Al Bidda, although the name Doha is far more well known. Population: 2004 estimates: 400,000 2008 estimates: 900,000 Note: most estimates given regarding the population of Doha are based on out-of-date figures, and fail to taken into account the re-estimation of the population of Qatar. The government now believes the population stands at close to 1,500,000 million rather than the previous figures of less than a million. Our own figures for Doha are based on a Qatar company's internal figures, which are yet to be published. Languages: A dialect of Arabic is spoken by most natives. English is also widely spoken and understood. Due to the enormous number of expatriates (80%) many other languages are spoken. Industry: Historically, Doha was a centre for pearl fishing, as well as a locally important harbour. Pearl fishing was essentially wiped out by the competition from Japanese cultured pearls in the first half of the twentieth century. After the second world oil became the major industry, although that is now being replaced by natural gas revenues. While oil and gas revenues remain the major driving force of the economy, banking is also becoming increasingly important, and the Goverment is also nurturing other industries such as steel. Famous for: Al Jazeera television channel, the 2006 Asian Games, the Doha debates and negotiating peace between the warring factions in Lebanon in 2008. |
