Disability Equipment: Mobility Aids Nowadays there are many mobility aids for disabled people, ranging from small gadgets to heavy duty ramps!
New on the market is the handy Bar, which allows the user to get into and out of vehicles easily. The soft grip, non-slip handle fits onto the U-shaped receiver of a car door frame, and forms an extra handle to help lever the user out of the vehicle.
Power chair and wheelchair users often require ramps. Ramps come in all lengths, from small threshold ramps for use at home, to roll up wheelchair ramps which the disabled user can take with him on trips out to manage a few stairs. Portable channel ramps are also available for the same purpose for four wheel scooters.
Scooters themselves come in many shapes and sizes also. Some models can take users of up to 35 stone in weight, and offering ranges varying from 10 - 35 miles. In the UK prices start from around £450 up to £6000! Accessories are available for these too, of course, and include waterproof covers, storage covers and "wheelybrellas"! Back bags can have slots to carry walking sticks as well as shopping, and oxygen bottle holders give mobility to all.
Special pressure relieving cushions are available in many sizes and for all purposes, with contours and cut-outs to relieve pain.
For wheelchair users, there are many items which aid living - including work trays which clip on, headrests, foam cushions, even glass holders and drink aids for users with very limited upper body movement. The Drink Aid from Promedics is a completely hands free drinking bottle and is an important addition to wheelchair user care, allowing control over fluid intake and independence - no more stressful waiting for assistance when thirsty!
