Snus

Snuff Snuff is a form of chewing tobacco. Manufactured by tobacco companies, the product is extremely popular in Sweden - a country where many smokers have switched from smoking to chewing tobacco. Since the switch has taken place the country's lung cancer rates have fallen to one of the lowest in the UK. Legality Snus is illegal in most of Europe. Ironically, much more dangerous forms of chewing tobacco are legal. Safety According to Dr Joel Nitzkin, Chair of the Tobacco Control Task Force for the American Association of Public Health Physicians, studies have shown no measurable increase in the risk of danger to the health. As a result, tobacco harm reduction enthusiasts support it as an alternative to cigarettes for smokers who can't or don't want to quit nicotine. The Problem? Despite this, there is huge opposition to Snus from the American anti-smoking lobby. (In contrast, the UK anti-smoking lobby is supportive of the concept of tobacco harm reduction.) In part this seems due to an idealistic opposition to the use of nicotine in any form, but it may also be due to the huge funding provided by the manufacturers of nicotine cessation aids. Unfortunately, this opposition has been backed up by claims which just aren't true - for example, that modern chewing tobacco is just as dangerous as smoking.
